What is an Electronic Air Cleaner?

Written by Vaughan Comfort Services on . Posted in .

Electronic air cleaners are a handy household appliance that can further purify the air in your home.
Most heating and cooling systems should have filters that trap particles floating around your house. They keep your HVAC systems from getting clogged and usually need to be replaced once per season (or more frequently for those with pets) to keep the airflow consistent and efficiently running.

Electronic air cleaners are appliances that are electrically charged to filter out air contaminants in your home. The electronic air cleaner can act as a pre-filter to your heating and cooling system’s filter, attracting dust, hair, and other particles towards it. They are also capable of attracting smaller particles such as bacteria and mold, and preventing unwelcome toxins from recirculating in your home.

Benefits of an Electronic Air Cleaner

Another potential benefit of electronic air filters is that they are reusable and easy to clean. They can be removed and washed, so you are able to monitor and control the air quality in your home.

Do you or any of your family members suffer from allergies? Electronic air filters are also effective in relieving symptoms of allergies, asthma, and other respiratory illnesses due to pollutants in the air.

Important to Note

If you are considering investing in an electronic air filter, it is important to know a few things:

  • Ozone Emissions – Unfortunately there are some brands that aren’t of the best quality and emit low levels of ozone, which can cause lung irritation. For people who deal with respiratory issues, this could be a problem, and reverse the potential good of the filter itself. Be sure to ask about ozone emissions if you are looking into a specific electronic air filter.
  • Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) – A MERV rating is used to rank the efficiency of air filters. All air filters contain holes that vary in size. The smaller the size of the filter, the higher the MERV rating. It is recommended to choose an electronic air filter with a MERV rating of 10 or higher.

If you are looking to improve the overall air quality in your house, investing in an electronic air filter may be the right move for you.
